I got my first out of school suspension in 3rd grade, but things had been hard from the start. I was also identified gifted in elementary school. But problems mounted and I was finally expelled in 10th grade. I know firsthand how damaging school failure can be. It impacts self-concept and can lead to many difficult and dangerous paths.
I believe true discipline is teaching and empowering. I believe in the great capacity of our students and educators to love and to learn. I believe that together we can reshape public education for future generations.
